Multi-generational homes are becoming more appealing where one home is divided into two separate living spaces allowing for families to be close but maintaining privacy in day-to-day life. These homeowners saw the potential to make this a reality in their family home and enlisted our help to maximize the overall layout, select all the finishes & custom design each kitchen and bathroom. They had begun the design process with Michael DeJong Homes, and we at Bella Casa Interiors created a personalized design plan for each family that incorporated their needs and wants into a completely re-imagined multi-generational home.
Upper Level
The shared foyer and laundry room (not photographed) provides access to each living space, while setting the tone for the home with a mix of warm woods, black, and lots of natural light. In the upper unit, this homeowner loves blues and purple and wanted to incorporate that into the kitchen and bathroom color schemes. Sparkle was also on high on the wish list, and we looked for ways to add subtle shimmer that were timeless and tasteful.
As the kitchen zone on the upper floor was further back from the wall of windows, warm white cabinets were installed with a contrasting island in Evening Dove by Benjamin Moore. We selected a hexagon mosaic with a 3D glossy finish that picked up the light and added that touch of sparkle the homeowner loved. The bathroom carries the same navy in the vanity, with wall tiles that have a pearlescent finish and a basket weave floor tile. In the shower, a porcelain tile with an organic swirling stone soft gray design complements the other finishes; the toile shower curtain adds a feminine touch that ties the whole color scheme together.
The luxury vinyl wood-look floors were used in the living spaces for both families, and by moving the living area to the back of the home, natural light streams into the living room throughout the entire day—a feature the homeowner enjoys very much!
Lower Level
The lower level of this multi-generational home has a completely different vibe from the upper unit, as these homeowners love a calm and neutral space. Warm creamy hues were used for the kitchen cabinetry, using Perfect Greige by Sherwin Williams for the contrasting cabinetry colors in the kitchen, eating area, and bathroom vanity. By using the same quartz for the backsplash and counters, a cohesively quiet tone sets the mood in the kitchen with subtle pops of color in the artwork and accessories adding vibrancy and a peek into their Columbian heritage.
Adding in lots of additional storage for this family was a priority, so we extended the kitchen cabinetry into two tall cabinets flanking the eating bench, and then continuing further into a media zone in the living area. The homeowners absolutely love this feature as it really allows them to have a place for everything and keeps their home looking clean and organized.
We re-purposed much of the furniture from their previous home but tied it all together with an original piece of art over the sofa by Marcela Strasdas sourced from the Crown and Press Art Gallery. The artwork ties in all the colors used throughout the home, creates a dramatic focal point, and continues that calm feeling with watery views.
The neutral color scheme flows into the bathroom with warm gray tiles on the vanity wall, and a complimentary porcelain tile with subtle striations adding layers of dimension to the shower and floors. A mini-herringbone mosaic keeps the shower floor slip-free, and the glass partition keeps an open feeling within the small space. Gold touches with the fixtures in the bathroom, kitchen, and lighting create a luxurious mix of finishes that adds elegance to every space.
That elegance also saturates the Master Bedroom, where we purchased a new custom-upholstered bed and updated the nightstands and dresser to complement the overall design. A touch of deep green brings contrast—still using colors from nature and continuing the vibrant tones used elsewhere within this home. The beautiful textured glass light fixture and wall sconces are the perfect finishing touches to this Bedroom design.
Bella Casa Interiors confidently assisted these families as they navigated the overhaul of their multi-generational home which required frequent communication, overcoming delays due with city permits, offering creative design solutions, and working with two completely different design styles. We worked seamlessly with the builder throughout the entire construction process & supported the homeowners through every phase of the design and installation bringing peace of mind during their first-ever large renovation project.
